The Diagnosis: Voltage Drop Testing Reveals the Truth
Our technician performed a thorough scan and found fault codes scattered across several modules — communication errors, low voltage warnings in the radio, HVAC, and HVAC controls. These modules all shared the same power circuit, which was a big clue.
The next step was voltage drop testing, a diagnostic technique that measures how much electrical energy is being lost before it reaches its destination. With the engine running, battery voltage measured 13.8 volts — normal. But at the fuse powering those struggling modules, voltage had dropped to 12.2 volts. That 1.6-volt loss doesn’t sound like much, but to sensitive electronics, it’s significant enough to cause exactly the symptoms this Yukon was showing.
Tracing the path further, the technician checked the block-to-body ground connection — a critical strap that ensures the engine block and vehicle body share a common electrical reference. That ground showed nearly 2 volts of drop, and when tested under load, it actually started to glow. That’s a sign of serious resistance caused by corrosion and a poor connection.
The Fix Was Simple — But Finding It Wasn’t
The corroded ground was removed, cleaned thoroughly, and reinstalled. After that, the voltage drop measured just 40 millivolts — well within normal range. The fuse supplying the radio and HVAC modules jumped back up to full battery voltage, and during a follow-up test drive, not a single symptom returned.
